One of the key points to survival is Hunting and Gathering. You will need food and water to live, and you'll need supplies to Craft a number of items for offensive and defensive measures.

Gathering

Gathering is quite simple in Rust. When you start the game, the only tool you'll have for gathering is the Rock. It's very slow, but it works when you need to gather some Resources from the world. Walk up to a tree or to a lone boulder and start smashing your rock on it to gather some items.

The Rock is useful, but it'd be best to upgrade it in favor of either the Stone Hatchet or the fancier (and deadlier) Hatchet weapon. To do that, you'll need to Craft two other items together. If you're not familiar with Crafting, see the Crafting page for details.

Rock Default Stone Hatchet 15 Wood + 5 Stone Hatchet 20 Wood + 10 Metal Fragments (furnace required)

Wood can be obtained by bashing trees with your Rock. There are a lot of trees out in the world, which means there is a lot of Wood. Stone can be obtained by bashing boulders that are standing out in the middle of a field. You can also obtain Metal Ore by bashing lone boulders with your Rock, but you'll need to use a Furnace to turn the ore into Metal Fragments. You may be able to find a Furnace in your server, or you may need to craft your own.

You can also gather supplies by looting a number of crates around Rust Island. If a player dies, you can also find and loot their dropped bag.

Along with Gathering supplies, you will need to hunt for meat and a few other animal-based resources. If you still have your Rock, you will most likely only be able to hunt a boar. Upgrade to a Stone Hatchet or obtain another type of Weapon to take on the faster or tougher wildlife. The bigger the animal, the more resources you can obtain from them.

With your supplies in order, you may want to Build a Shelter or Cook Some Food next.
